The Breast Cancer Bracelet - Its Significance

It all began during the Awareness Campaign where the Breast Cancer Bracelet and the Pink Ribbon turned into the symbols for this fight. In the early 1980’s, The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, began to use the pink ribbon in the race for the cure of cancer during the run-walk event which is the signature event for fundraising in this Foundation.

The Armstrong’s rubber wristband and the breast cancer awareness bracelets are among the more popular. The ‘LiveStrong’ rubber band bracelet comes in yellow and the Breast Cancer Awareness Bracelet is pink.

There is a story behind why the colour Pink was chosen for the rubber band. In the 1990’s, a 68-year-old woman named Charlotte Haley, began making and distributing cards that read “1.8 billion is the yearly budget for the National Cancer Institute, and only 5% goes to cancer prevention”. Charlotte’s grandma, sister and daughter suffered from breast cancer.

Charlotte’s peach ribbon was requested by a magazine to be published but she denied it, so for that reason the magazine came up with a comforting, and curative colour: pink. The pink ribbon turned into the worldwide symbol for breast cancer very soon, leaving behind the original peach ribbon.

The Cancer Bracelet and Lance Armstrong

People feel that they are contributing to a solid cause by purchasing and wearing the yellow bracelet, which is an easy item to wear as a fashion add-on, that is why Lance Armstrong has become a cultural phenomenon. The bracelet can be worn with almost everyday attires; jeans and t-shirts, sports outfits, etc. It is so easy to wear that you can see corporate executives and professional athletes having the bracelet on frequently.
