Breast cancer is the most dreaded cancer in women. The cause is not known. There are some risk factors known in the case of breast cancer. Like any other cancer the cells in the breast start multiplying without any control or reason.
They form a tumor in the breast. It is generally found that the left breast of the woman gets affected first than the right. Only 1% men suffer from breast cancer.
There are some risk factors that can not be changed such as the age. As the woman grows old, her chances of getting breast cancer increases. The researchers have found that there are two genes BRCA1 and BRCA2. If you have inherited these genes then you are at the high risk of getting breast cancer. If your mother or sister has breast cancer they you should also get yourself tested. If you had your periods before you were 12 years old or if you are 55 and still going through menopause then the risk factor is high in such cases.
There are other risk factors such as taking birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy, being over weight and having your first child when you are over 35 years. These are some of the risk factors over which you have some control.
Generally a lump in the breast is felt by the woman. She may experience some secretion from the nipples the shape of the breast may change. Self examination and mammography help in detecting breast cancer at the early stage. In case of breast cancer surgery is the only option. The surgeon removes the tumor and affected part of the breast. Sometimes the entire breast is removed. If the cancer is spread to near lymph nodes then some nodes in the armpits may also be removed.
If detected at early stage the breast cancer is treatable. The patient can lead a normal life. But the psychological effect of having the breast removed can play a major part in the patient’s well being.
After surgery generally chemotherapy and radiation given to make sure no cancer cell is alive in the body. The patient may experience side effects of chemotherapy such as loss of hair, loss of appetite and sores in the mouth, nausea and vomiting. Once the cancer is removed and the chemotherapy cycle is complete the patient can lead almost normal life. Periodical checks are advisable.
